It all started when Elliot visited Cambodia and met a young girl named Thea. Little did he know that this meeting would have such a profound impact on him. Thea always had a nail polish on her tiny nails, and one day, as they chatted, she asked to paint one of Elliot’s nails. He happily agreed, not knowing the significance behind this simple act.
It was during this conversation that Elliot discovered Thea’s painful past – she had been a victim of sexual abuse. This revelation deeply moved Elliot, and he made a heartfelt promise to Thea. “As she painted one of my nails, I assured her I would always keep it that way to remember her, and by extension, her suffering,” Elliot shared.
This powerful moment ignited a fire within Elliot and inspired him to take action. He realized that in order to make a positive change in society, particularly among men, who are responsible for 96% of sexual violence against children globally, a movement needed to be created. And that’s how #PolishedMan was born.
The concept of Polished Man is simple yet impactful – men paint one of their nails with nail polish. This one painted nail represents the one in five children who will become victims of sexual violence. By proudly displaying this symbol, Polished Man aims to raise awareness about the prevalence of child sexual abuse and initiate conversations around this critical issue.
But Polished Man doesn’t stop at just raising awareness. Through the organization, men are encouraged to challenge violent behavior and language, both locally and globally. Together, they become catalysts for change, working towards putting an end to the abuse of innocent children.
