Throughout his life, Scott Hamilton has faced many hurdles, from learning how to skate as a young boy to dealing with the heartbreak of losing his mother to breast cancer in 1977.
However, the challenges didn’t stop there. In 1997, Scott tackled a battle of his own when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, but he emerged victorious, thanks to surgery and chemotherapy.
In 2016, Scott was dealt another blow when a pituitary tumor in his brain made an unwanted return for the third time. Recently, he shared a troubling update about his condition, leaving many eager to find out more about his situation.
Scott Hamilton’s Cancer Journey
“When they delivered the diagnosis, it was confirmed—it’s back,” Scott, the renowned gold medalist, explained in an interview with People. “A young, talented surgeon was brought in and suggested another surgery. It would be complex, but we have a talented team that can make it happen if it’s an option for you,” he recalled being told.
Faced with surgery for a third time—having had surgeries in 2004 and 2010—Scott was understandably hesitant. Recalling his past experiences, he told Men’s Journal about the complexity and difficulty he faced, especially when an artery in his brain was accidentally nicked, leading to nine additional surgeries.
Firmly, he decided against similar ordeals, choosing instead to focus on strengthening himself. “I thought, don’t worry about this. Just go home and gather your strength,” he resolutely declared.
This decision brought positive news. “It turned out to be quite remarkable,” Scott beamed. “Three months later, a scan revealed no growth, and three months after that, it showed a 45% shrinkage.”
A Difficult Update
However, subsequent scans indicated that the tumor began to grow again. Unlike previous times, Scott opted not to undergo treatment, expressing confidence in his choice, as reported by Fox News.
“Again, my instinct was don’t worry about it. Just return home and get strong,” he shared. “They asked what I wanted to do, and I replied, ‘I think I’m going to focus on getting stronger.’”
Reflecting on his journey, Scott admitted to some uncertainties about his approach, acknowledging he might consider treating the tumor if the situation calls for it. “Luckily, there’s a targeted radiation therapy available now that can shrink the tumor,” he disclosed.
This year marked Scott’s 66th birthday and the 40th anniversary of his Olympic victory in Sarajevo in 1984. He feels thankful for his life’s achievements and the love surrounding him, especially from his family.
Talking about his family, Scott expressed amazement at the unexpected joys life has bestowed upon him. “I never imagined I’d be blessed in this way,” he stated, voicing gratitude for his wife and children and the opportunities to contribute back to figure skating and support cancer research.
The Latest Update
In November 2024, Scott spoke with People regarding The Scott Hamilton and Friends ice show held at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to fundraise for his CARES Foundation. The foundation supports cancer research, a cause dear to Scott not only due to his mother’s passing but also because of his personal battle with cancer.
“I’m doing wonderfully!” Scott reported and added: “At 66 years, contemplating the future, I know that as long as cancer exists, I’ll be active in the battle as a volunteer.”
