Lisa and her husband David shared a close relationship where answering each other’s calls when busy was commonplace. One day, while David was in the shower, Lisa noticed a message pop up on his phone just after she’d finished speaking with his mother.
The message read: “Please don’t tell Lisa yet. We’ll do it together.” Lisa’s heart sank, convinced David was seeing someone else. Feeling overwhelmed, she sat quietly, listening to David’s usual cheerful humming from the shower.
Lisa and David had been together since their high school days, with neither having dated anyone else. Later that evening, while feeling the weight of the message, she pretended to be tired to exit early from their usual movie night.
Alone in their bedroom, curiosity got the better of Lisa. She skimmed through David’s messages, expecting to find evidence of infidelity. To her surprise, the conversations were all centered on her – discussing her work and hobbies. Confused yet hopeful, she boldly sent a message from David’s phone: “Come over tomorrow, my place, at 2 p.m. Lisa will be at work.”
At 2 p.m. the following day, Lisa was home, unable to concentrate on work. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. She opened the door to an older woman named Gloria, someone vaguely familiar.
“Are you Lisa?” Gloria asked. “I’m your mother.”
Shock paired with disbelief, Lisa struggled to comprehend. Her husband wasn’t having an affair; Gloria was her biological mother. Although Lisa knew she was adopted, she had only ever seen her mother’s photo from when she was young.
Sitting inside with Gloria, the story unfolded over shared hot chocolate. “You were born out of love,” Gloria recounted, explaining how young love and unfavorable circumstances forced them to give baby Lisa up for adoption at just days old.
A photograph taken at the time was her only keepsake, signed “Gloria Manson, 1987.” As Gloria spoke, tears flowed, washing away years of misunderstanding and loss.
As David joined them, confusion turned to clarity. “I didn’t know how to tell you,” David said. “Gloria reached out to me months ago. I was trying to find the right way to help her reconnect with you.”
Gloria elaborated, “David suggested telling you sooner, but I was hesitant. I needed some time to prepare myself and find strength to explain.”
This revelation left Lisa puzzling over the delay in being told. Yet Gloria’s explanation, filled with the fears and hopes of a long-lost mother, resonated deeply with her.
“You’re not obliged to do anything,” Gloria assured, “but I’m here if you’d like to know me better.”
The roomful of resentment faded to nothingness as Lisa embraced her mother and then David. It was an unspoken answer from Lisa – a readiness to embark on this newfound relationship and family chapter.
