They find a cozy café nearby, and Greg offers, “Order anything you want.”
The woman looks grateful. “Thank you. I’m Lily, and this is my son, Matthew.”
“Nice to meet you both. I’m Greg,” he replies, signaling the waiter.
As they eat, Greg learns a bit about Lily’s situation. She’s been unlucky. No phone, no wallet, and her plan has collapsed.
“Will you be okay when you get home?” Greg asks.
Lily nods, gratitude shining in her eyes. “Yes. Your help means so much to me.”
Moved by her sincerity, Greg hands Lily his paycheck, meant for his children’s education. “You need this now. Get home safely.”
Lily appears stunned by his generosity. “I can’t accept this. You don’t know me.”
“It’s okay,” he assures her. “It’s the right thing to do.”
With tears in her eyes, Lily hugs him and thanks him before disappearing into the night with Matthew.
When Greg arrives home, his family is curious and concerned. Diana worries about their finances.
“You gave away our savings, Greg?” she inquires.
Greg rubs his temples, hoping he made the right choice. “She seemed genuine.”
Despite the tension, life continues the next day. Greg goes to work, but a surprise awaits him upon his return home—a large white limousine.
Diana, peering out the window, calls him over. “Greg, you need to see this.”
A man in a suit steps out, and Greg opens the door cautiously.
“Hello, are you Greg?” the man asks.
“Yes, I am,” Greg replies.
“I represent Ms. Lily. You helped her yesterday, correct?”
Greg feels a mix of relief and confusion. “Is she alright?”
“She’s doing well, thanks to your kindness. She’s actually a prominent figure in this town,” the man explains.
Diana interjects, “But she took our money!”
The man elaborates, “Lily was once successful, but she’s fallen on hard times. Travel brought her to a breaking point, and someone took advantage of her.”
Greg and Diana listen in awe as he explains that Lily found herself stranded. Greg’s instincts had been right.
“She didn’t want to be treated differently. Your kindness moved her,” the man continued, handing Greg an envelope.
Inside is a gift beyond their wildest dreams: a scholarship fund for their children and additional support.
Overwhelmed, Greg asks, “Why would she do this?”
“Sometimes, kindness is the greatest gift,” the man smiles. “And she wanted to repay yours tenfold.”
As the limousine departs, Diana embraces Greg, reflecting on the power of generosity.
