A school bus driver named Dan noticed a little boy crying at the back of his bus. Despite being down to his last penny, he decided to help the child, oblivious to the fact that his kind act would soon come full circle.
On that chilled morning, the icy weather and cold winds made Dan shiver as he opened the bus door. A group of warmly dressed, cheery children hurriedly climbed aboard.
“Hurry in, kiddos! The cold is biting today! Brrr…” Dan shivered, making the children giggle.
“You’re so funny, Dan!” shouted a little girl as she boarded the bus. “Tell your mom to get you a new scarf!”
“Oh, sweetie, I wish my mom were alive to buy me a better scarf than yours! I’m so jealous!” he teased, making the girl smile.
“My mom gets me the prettiest scarves!” she replied. “I’ll ask her to get one for you too!”
“Oh, no, no, sweetie. I was just joking! Now hop in, I need to drive carefully today.”
Benevolence often bears kindness, and sometimes even love.
Such was the nature of Dan, a jolly and plump man whose face always carried a broad smile while driving the school bus. The children’s laughter and giggles brightened his day, and despite the meager paycheck which often led to discussions with his wife, he loved his job.
“They pay you mere peanuts! You realize that, right? We won’t be able to cope with this job amidst inflation,” his wife would often say.
“Honey,” he would reply gently, “you know how much I adore what I do. I’ll work hard, and things will turn out fine for us, I promise!”
But being a kind soul doesn’t pay the bills, or so it seemed to Dan when he was alone after dropping off the children. He often pondered over his struggles and tried to find solutions.
On that icy day, with the bus laden with a thick frost, Dan drove cautiously. Being stuck in the middle of the road wasn’t an option.
Once they reached school, he advised the children to mind their steps. “Don’t slip and hurt yourselves on the ice, kids! Be careful, little ones!”
After the students disembarked, Dan decided to grab a cup of steaming coffee from the café opposite the school. “A warm coffee would be the perfect antidote to this cold,” he thought eagerly.
But before alighting, Dan heard a soft sob and paused. Peering towards the back of the bus, he noticed a boy still seated.
“Hey, kiddo,” he called out. “Aren’t you heading to school today?”
The little boy was crying, nodding his head.
“What’s wrong, young man? Are you okay?” Dan asked, approaching him.
The boy was concealing his hands behind and Dan noticed this. “What are you hiding there, buddy?” he inquired. “Is something troubling you? You can tell me, I’m here to help!”
“It’s… it’s just so cold outside,” the boy finally said. “I feel frozen…”
With that admission, the boy showed Dan his hands, and Dan was taken aback. The child’s hands were chilled and turned blue from the cold.
Quickly, Dan removed his gloves and put them over the boy’s hands. “See, I know they’re too big for you, buddy, but they’ll keep you warm. Did you lose your gloves?”
The boy nodded. “Mom and Dad said they couldn’t afford new ones right now. They promised to get me some next month as mine are all torn.”
Feeling terrible, Dan reassured the boy. “Oh, it’s alright, buddy,” he said. “I have a friend at the clothing store who makes the best gloves! I’ll get you a pair after school, okay? Now, hurry along before you’re late for class…”
The boy wiped away his tears, thanked Dan, and ran off to school, unaware that Dan had fibbed about knowing someone at the clothing store.
Dan never got his coffee that day. Instead, he headed to a nearby shop and spent his last penny on a pair of gloves and a scarf for the boy. With payday in a few days, Dan viewed this as a necessary expense.
Later that day, as the young boy was about to leave the bus, Dan handed him the gloves and scarf.
“These will keep you warm,” Dan assured. “Don’t worry about your parents, alright?”
Tears filled Dan’s eyes as the boy hugged him and said “goodbye” before getting off the bus. Little did Dan know this act of kindness would reward him unexpectedly.
A few days later, Dan was summoned to the principal’s office without warning.
“Have you called me for a meeting, Mr. Butu?” Dan nervously asked, knocking on the principal’s door.
Mr. Butu smiled warmly. “Please, have a seat, Dan. We need to talk.”
Dan’s heart started racing. He thought he was in trouble, but as Mr. Butu began to speak, Dan’s eyes welled up with happy tears.
“You shouldn’t have done this, sir. Goodness, we thank you so much!”
“You’ve earned it, Dan!” exclaimed Mr. Butu. “We felt compelled to honor your generosity after learning about your help to Alin and his family. Alin’s father is a firefighter who’s been severely injured, and their family is struggling. Your assistance meant the world to the little boy and his family. And about that box…”
Dan had left a box on the school premises near the main gate a couple of days earlier. It was brimming with gloves and scarves, with a note attached that read: “If you’re cold, take something from here. I’d appreciate it. — Dan, the school bus driver.”
The night after helping Alin, Dan hadn’t been able to sleep well, worrying about other children who might be in similar situations. So, after receiving his paycheck, he bought more gloves and scarves, filled a box, and left it at the school.
The school staff, along with some parents, commended his gesture, and Dan was applauded in front of the entire school. Soon, his salary saw an upward change. But the story didn’t end there.
The school initiated a fund to aid students from financially troubled families. Unbeknownst to them, a pair of gloves, a scarf, and the big heart of a bus driver had fueled this splendid cause.
What do we glean from this tale?
Benevolence begets benevolence, and sometimes, it also breeds love. Dan cherished the kids in his bus as if they were his own and out of genuine care, he chose to extend his help to one little boy. This affection and kindness came back to him.
Help anyone when you have the chance, and you’ll never regret it. Dan lent a helping hand to Alin and other kids by buying gloves and scarves out of his own pocket. He even gave up his coffee for them. This sacrifice brought back waves of love and gratitude.
